“…never accept an accusation brought against an elder unless it is supported by two or three witnesses. If anyone is at fault, reprimand him publicly, as a warning to the rest…” 1 Timothy 5:19,20 NJB (italics and emphasis mine)
These days it is rare to hear of “church discipline”, a church member (or leader) being under “church discipline” by church leaders. May be it is because we have this fallacy that once we are born again we cannot err, so when we do, both members and leaders work so hard to hide it.
We see in the early church that they had church discipline; the writer of Hebrew (12:3-11) quoting Proverbs 3:11,12 states that whomever God loves he discipline (punish, chasten, reprimand, correct). As hard is it may be, discipline is good—it benefits the one under discipline as well as the body of Christ, the Church.
