Issues of Life

“…keep and guard your heart with all vigilance and above all that you guard, for out of it flow the springs of life...” Prov 4:23 AMP (italics and emphasis mine)

Did you know that your spirit knows things that your heart/mind (soul) or body (flesh) does not know? (1 Cor 2:6-16). Have you ever done something (based on intuition or gut as we call it) only to understand why later? I’m talking about last minute cancellation of a trip, stop signing of a contract or postpone paying that online store, sell/buy shares on stock market. Your spirit knew exactly what was going on but your mind (soul heart) and senses (body) had no clue...ever wondered why?

Our challenge is to keep clean and calm of our mind (heart) long enough to hear what our spirit is desperately trying to tell us. We need to exercise daily how to un-clutter our minds with unnecessary elements. Trouble is, however, our mind (intellect, emotions, will) and body (lust of the flesh) are so loud that we cannot hear what God’s Spirit is saying through our spirit. Fasting (deprive bodily desire) and waiting upon the Lord in a quiet place is a good start. David said, “…I have calmed and quieted my soul…” Ps 131:2a, AMP

The Open Secret

“…and David led the troops in their campaigns. In everything he did he had great success, because the LORD was with him...” 1 Sam 18:13b,14 NIV (italics and emphasis mine)

Something about David attracted the heart of God that He was willing to boast publicly that ‘I have found a man after my own heart’ when he tore the Kingdom from Saul and gave it to David. Perhaps it had something to do with David’s heart (attitude) towards God and His precepts. What we know is that the kingdom was taken from Saul because he consistently disobeyed God (1 Sam 13:13-14).

It is interesting to note that David’s success was not attributed to his leadership skills; strength, agility or weaponry of his troops (which were all important) but to the fact that ‘the Lord was with him’. No wonder he said, ONE THING I have DESIRED and THAT I WILL SEEK, to be in the presence of the Lord ALL THE DAYS OF MY LIFE (Ps 27:4), this explains King David’s Open secret of his success...

Wealth & Riches-in my house!

Praise the LORD. Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who finds great delight in his commands. His children will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed. Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever...” Psalm 112:1-3, NIV (italics and emphasis mine)

I grew up believing poverty and holiness are synonymous; you couldn’t separate them. Jesus being the model, He was poor (no house, no income), lived amongst the poor and preached pro-poverty (blessed are the poor for theirs is the Kingdom of God-Luke 6:20; it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God-Matt 19:24, etc) Then I discovered a few wealthy men in the OT: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Job, Solomon; NT: Cornelius, Joseph of Arimathea.

I also read that God gives us power to get wealth (Deu 8:18), God’s blessing will make me rich (Prov 10:22), that a good man leaves inheritance to his children’s children (Prov 13:22) and sinner’s wealth is stored for the just (Prov 13:22b); that Jesus was poor that I may be abundantly supplied (rich) (2 Cor 8:9). I realize I must have been taking Jesus and his teachings out of context…the devil fights hard to keep Christians poor, this way he will frustrate our mission, spreading the gospel and enjoying life, “…the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard…” Eccl 9:16, NKJV

¨Does God care whether we are rich (abundantly supplied) or poor (lack)?

Thou wicked Servant

“…then the man who had received one talent came. 'Master,' he said, 'I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown...So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground...' "His master replied, 'You wicked, lazy servant!...you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest..." Matt 25:24-27, NIV (italics and emphasis mine)

Someone recently told me that he feels useless when it comes to serving God’s people as he has no talent, I told him that his thinking was an insult to God (saying He has created a useless piece of junk simply to fill the earth). More often, this line of thinking is a result of ignorance in understanding of what talent is. A talent is a natural, God given gift, ability or skill to an individual to serve humanity with. Talent is not just singing, acting and dancing ability, it’s anything that you can do well.

The above text highlights important observations; ONE: we don't own our talents, we’re custodian. TWO: we are expected to trade our talents, trade—exchange what you have for what you need or want. THREE: talents are given based on ability to handle. FOUR: as we become faithful (character) with what we can handle (ability), we will be trusted with more. FIVE: if we don't trade our talents, we are wicked (evil, sinful, immoral?) and, SIX: we will give account on what we have done with our talents. Do you know your talent? If not, how can you trade it?
