Balm of Gilead

“…is there no balm in Gilead ? Is there no physician there? Why then is there no healing for the wound of my people? …” Jeremiah 8:22 NIV [italics & emphasis mine]

Gilead was a beautiful country just beyond Jordan where a certain rare tree grew; the leaves from the branches of this tree were used to cure illnesses (Jer 51:8b)…the tree was called the Balm. Ishmael travelling from Gilead carried it (Gen 37:25); when Children of Israel visited Joseph in Egypt , their father instructed them to carry ‘the balm’ for Joseph. The prophet of God in the above scripture was asking a rhetoric question that how comes God’s people are suffering whilst there is the Balm and physicians in Gilead ?

The church today suffers enormous blows; people in church (born again, spirit filled, tongue talking sanctified saints) are physically sick, demon oppressed, riddled with poverty, problems in marriages has become a norm, just to mention a few. Why is this whilst there is a balm in Gilead ? The answer can’t be any simpler…SIN, yes sin in church [Idol worship, unbelief & ignorance]; we have turned away God’s presence-Power. Therefore, vv 10,13, God has taken away our harvest and wives and given us snakes to bite us because, he continues vv 4 we have fallen but not got up, we have turn away but did not return. So then the question is not falling or turning away…THE QUESTION BRETHREN, IS GETTING UP AND RE-TURNING ONCE WE COME TO OUR SENSES.

Is God’s will Automatic?

“…the Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance…” 2 Peter 3:9 KJV [italics & emphasis mine]

We have all heard from time and again that what God wants will happen regardless. As a result of this line of thinking and belief, we live and leave our destiny to prayer and belief in God alone. We think and believe that somehow what God has planned and destined for us will happen no matter what, after all He is God, He can do anything including overriding my Will (right of choice)…right? WRONG completely very WRONG!

Whilst it remains true that God’s plan will stand regardless, your destiny relies 100% on you. The scripture above tells us that God is not willing for anyone to perish, and so He extends ‘the Grace period’ however, many will perish—why? they choose to ignore Jesus and his sacrifice. God never intended to take Israelites from Egypt and kill them in the wilderness, but their continued disobedience gave them just that. As believers, we have the duty to ‘discover’ God’s will for our lives-destiny (calling/assignment) and act accordingly in order to realize our purpose and destiny in life.

Stuck in Wilderness?

“…For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future…” (c) Jeremiah 29:11 NIV [italics & emphasis mine]

God’s plan for humanity after the fall can be summed up to four fold; save us FROM sin TO righteousness, adopt us to be His sons/daughters hence joint heirs with Jesus Christ, afford us the privilege to serve Him on earth and last but definitely not least, take us to the new heavens and earth.

Like the exodus of children of Israel, our salvation—God’s plan—is a journey that we take with Christ. Like the Israelites, most of us are stuck in the wilderness. Saved from sin (Egypt), adopted as children of God but struggle to accept the adoption. We live in the wilderness like the Israelites because of fear and unbelief, somehow we believed that God loved us enough to save us from sin into righteousness but not quite enough to give us the privilege of Canaan land—honey and milk—so like Israel we shy away from fighting the giants that hold our stuff—healing, peace, joy and yes—wealth.

Faith less works=Dead

“…As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead…” James 2:26 NIV [italics & emphasis mine]

When we believe God for something, we have to back our belief with ‘works, i.e. action’ else according to James our faith is as good as dead. On verse 18 of the same chapter, James argues that ‘show me your faith without works and I will show you my faith by my works’. This can be very confusing for we know that man is not justified by works but by faith according to Romans 3:28.

To understand James, we need to know that faith is made up of belief system. When we believe we act, if we do not then we never believed period. Abraham was enthroned father of faith WHEN he gave his only son likewise even though we are saved by faith by believing in our hearts, we receive salvation BY CONFESSING with our mouth (action), Rom 10:10. It follows therefore quite naturally that if you believe God for something, back up your belief with an act of faith.
