Ordinary Men, Extraordinary Work

“…Now when they saw the boldness and unfettered eloquence of Peter and John and perceived that they were unlearned and untrained in the schools [common men with no educational advantages], they marveled; and they recognized that they had been with Jesus…” Acts 4:13 AMP, italics and emphasis mine

What is it about being with Jesus that gave Peter and John such boldness (audacity, bravery, confidence) and eloquence (articulacy, fluency, persuasiveness)? Considering they were unlearned, uneducated, ordinary fishermen talking to experts, professionals, professors of the law and religion.

I believe two things happened to them whilst in the company of Jesus, ONE they learned of their identity (who they are in God); and TWO, they knew God and Jesus was with them, speaking through them by the Holy Spirit in them. If you “get this”, your lack of education, color, social status or wealth cannot stop you!

Fishers of Men

“…And He said to them, Come after Me [as disciples--letting Me be your Guide], follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men!…” Matt 4:19 AMP, italics and emphasis mine

Jesus talked to the disciples about fishery for they were fishermen; yet He tells them that He will MAKE THEM fishers of men. He was saying, I know you are fishers of fish, but I will turn you into fishers of men…all you have to do is FOLLOW ME (take my guidance, obey and trust me).

When a fish is caught, it is taken from the world that it can survive (water) into the world that it can’t (dry land)...it has to die. Jesus was saying, I will show you how you can take people from their world of sin into my world where they will die in themselves but be alive in Christ (Rom 6:11; 8:10)

Kingdom Buried

“…The kingdom of heaven is like something precious buried in a field, which a man found and hid again; then in his joy he goes and sells all he has and buys that field…” Matt 13:44 AMP, italics and emphasis mine

I find it strange that Jesus talks of the Kingdom of heaven as something hidden, buried in the field. But 1 Cor 1:18 helps us to understand for it says the message of the cross is foolishness (silly, idiotic, nonsense, thoughtless) to those who are perishing. In other words, the message of the Kingdom is hidden to those perishing.

He continues to say that this wise guy went AND SOLD ALL HE HAD and came back to purchase THE WHOLE FIELD. 1 Pet 2:1-3 tells us that now that we've tasted the Lord, we ought to desire the "whole thing" so that we may be completed. Let us be prepared to sell everything else in order to get what matters most.

Wilderness Experince

“…THEN JESUS was led (guided) by the [Holy] Spirit into the wilderness (desert) to be tempted (tested and tried) by the devil…” Matt 4:1 AMP, italics and emphasis mine

God led not just Jesus to be tempted, but also Israel, “…remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the desert these forty years, to humble you and to test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands…” Deut 8:2. The wilderness/desert is dry, barren, desolate, wasteland, bleak area.

Jesus (and Israel) was led by God into the wilderness/desert (not the devil) to be tempted, tried and tested and so will we. What is your wilderness, desert experience? Whatever it is, know that it only last for a season and for a reason. God is interested to shape your character and to do you good at later end.
