R U Drunk?

“…your minds, then, must be sober and ready for action; put all your hope in the grace brought to you by the revelation of Jesus Christ…” 1 Peter 1:13 NJB, italics and emphasis mine

A drunken individual, in a TV commercial, jumped from a high rising building thinking he could fly like superman J; needless to say he crushed. When we are drunk, we loose the sense of reality; our sense of judgment becomes critically impaired. Paul tells us that we should be sober in mind and be ready for action.

Some of the things we can be drunk from are such as alcohol, drugs, anger, frustrations, fear, anxiousness, desperation, jealous and the like…e.g. a desperate elderly spinster marries a non-believer, decisions made in fear drives us deeper into trouble etc. It is wise to sober up first before we make that critical decision in life.

Waiting Lounge or Table

“…the LORD is good to those who wait for Him, to the Soul who seeks Him. It is good that one should hope and wait quietly…for the LORD will not cast off forever, though He causes grief, yet He will show compassion…” Lamentation 3:25-26, 31-32 NKJV, italics and emphasis mine

Our microwave, Concorde, bullet train, ATM, pressure cooker, instant coffee, OF internet generation has lost the most important character—ability to wait. As a teachers of faith, we are also guilty of teaching faith is NOW, we forget faith goes with patience–endurance, persistence, fortitude (Hebrews 6:11-12; James 1:3).

We can wait upon the Lord as the waiter waits on the table for orders (serve God) or as a person waiting for the transport at bus/train station (to be served/saved by God). Other translation use the word “trust” in place of “wait”…either way we wait quietly, no murmuring or complains; if you have to speak, utter words of praise and adoration for what He’s done.

Take Care of UR Own!

“…anyone who does not look after his own relations, especially if they are living with him, has rejected the faith and is worse than an unbeliever…” 1 Tim 5:8 NJB, italics and emphasis mine

With all due respect to ministers on the telly who keep on urging the general public to send them money (even from credit cards—go in debt to support the ministry, mmmh) I believe that as believers, our first and foremost care responsibility is our family and second the local church/ministry in which we are planted.

Apostle Paul, instructing Timothy about the social welfare of the widows, makes it clear that our priority starts in our own-blood related-family then extended to the church-Christians. If one fails his family, he’s worse than unbeliever; i.e. the offerings, prayers and faith become futile simply for not caring of own family.

Living Saints?

“…All the saints send you greetings, especially those who belong to Caesar's household…” Philippians 4:22 NIV, italics and emphasis mine

The Roman Catholic Church has a strict rigorous process in declaring (canonizing) a departed person a “saint” they look at his life, what he/she did, if he/she performed miracles, helped people etc…there is such a long list of attributes one would have to attain to be ‘declared’ a saint. Yet we see throughout the epistles that the early believers called each other saints.

If you ask any believer today if they are saint, most would hesitate to answer...the reason could be because we associate the word “saint” with holiness, humility, charity, prayerfulness, self-denial, innocence, blameless etc. It is important however, to know that we are made ‘righteous’ by faith in-spite of ourselves (Rom 5:19, Phil 3:9) and before God’s eyes, the righteous are saints.

Majoring on Minor

“…Quite frankly, I don't want to be bothered anymore by these disputes. I have far more important things to do—the serious living of this faith. I bear in my body scars from my service to Jesus…” Galatians 6:17 MSG, italics and emphasis mine

Several months ago I heard that some ministers in Tanzania were openly attacking each other based on doctrinal differences pertaining “dress code” for Christians. My heart sunk with sorrow as I felt what a waste of God’s resources (money and time) on airwaves. There are things we can do without, things that really don’t matter as far as our salvation is concerned.

This was also the case in the NT church, Paul—talking to Galatians contending about the issues of the law, circumcision etc—rebukes them saying that there are far more important (serious) things to do. The church today needs this attitude; we have far more serious things to do re: the gospel than to obsess ourselves with debate about food, clothing, fashion, religion…
