Time and Chance

“…I returned and saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift nor the battle to the strong, neither is bread to the wise nor riches to men of intelligence and understanding nor favor to men of skill; but time and chance happen to them all…” © Eccl 9:11, AMP italics and emphasis mine

In retrospect, how many things you planned to do this year but didn’t do? and who is to blame, weather, credit crunch, politicians, pastor, God? It couldn’t be you, could it? Yes, we have a tendency to blame everybody and everything else but ourselves for missed opportunities and time.

People who win races (overcomers) in life are not necessarily more swift than the rest of us, and those who accumulate riches (wealth) are not necessarily more intelligent than the rest (scripture above)…the distinction is how we ‘spend our time’, you want progress, watch where you invest your time!

Massaged by a Prostitute

“…a woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume. As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them…” © Luke 7:36-39, NIV italics and emphasis mine

I believe Jesus did the ‘forbidden deeds’ of His time just to ‘provoke religious and pious’ people to think outside the box…dined with criminals, brew alcohol, broke Sabbath and traditions…No wonder He said He did not come to bring peace (Mat 10:34) and that He came so that those who are blind may see and those who see may become blind (John 9:39).

As we celebrate commemoration of Jesus’ Birth, let us remember the ‘great commission’ that He left us behind for…let’s stop being cosy in our churches, fellowships, clicks andclubs and get out there to meet and minister those to whom we are assigned, remember, those who are well don't need physician…peace be unto all mankind!

According 2 UR Ability

“…Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted hiswealth to them. To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. The man who had received five bags of gold went at once and put his money to work and gained five bags more. So also, the one with two bags of gold gained two more. But the man who had received one bag went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money…” Luke 25:14-18, NIVitalics and emphasis mine.

As we approach the end of 2010, many of us have a hundred and one excuses and reasons why we have not done WHAT WE KNOW we should have done with our talents, abilities, gifts, calling and assignments in life. If only I was in America, if only I had a million dollar, if only I was known, if only I had her looks, her voice, if only I was connected like so and so, if this and if that…

Note that Jesus said each was given“according to his ability” vv 15, NIV; so none would complain I have more than I can handle or I can handle more than what I was given. Have you invested (given yourself) in 100% to what you have? Stop coveting other servants returns and success and work on your own…in due time you will have your rewards, returns and success ACCORDINGLY!

CALL for BACK-UP!

“…prayer is essential in this on-going warfare. Pray hard and long. Pray for your brothers and sisters. Keep your eyes open. Keep each other's spirits up so that no one falls behind or drops out. And don't forget to pray for me. Pray that I'll know what to say and have the courage to say it at the right time, telling the mystery to one and all…” Efe 6:18-19 MSG,italics and emphasis mine

When a police officer, soldier or an army is overwhelmed in the battle field, they would call for back-up; in fact, some missions are so crucial that they would have back-up of the back-up. As Christians, we ought to know that we are constantly at war with the evil one and sooner or later you will either need to call for back-up or be called as a back-up.

Have you ever seriously, decisively and purposely asked for prayer when you are going through some treacherous paths? If Paul, the Apostle, would ask for help…I believe we all do need to have a circle of close trusted beloved that we can call in the middle of the night, in the midst of chaos and ask them to pray for and with us through a situation!

Thus says the Lord...for real?

“…Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world…” © 1 John 4:1, NIV, italics and emphasis mine

An 1872 experiment by Heinzmann (later corroborated in 1875 by Fratscher) demonstrated that when a normal frog is placed in a cold water and temperature suddenly raised, the frog would leap out. But when the water is very gradually raised the frog would not attempt to escape. One source from 1897 says, "…when water temperature was raised at a rate of 0.002°C/s, the frog was found dead at the end of 2½ hours without having moved” (Sedgwick, William, July, 1888)

It is said the most dangerous kind of false teaching (or heresy) is that which comes from your trusted everyday spiritual leaders, gradually moving away from the truth…the reason is simple, you don’t see it coming as it comes from the spiritual authority you have learnt to trust, and it comes so gradual you don’t realize, question or doubt until it is too little too late. My point is, no matter who speaks to your life, learn to measure it against the word and the Holy Spirit inside you.

Temporary Structures

“…therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing…” © 1 Thessalonians 5:11, NIV italics mine

When tall building structures are under construction, you will see around them temporary structures also known as scaffolds. As a building structural engineer, I know too well how we use temporary structures to access and stabilize the construction of the permanent structure. Likewise we as God’s Holy Temple (in the making), have temporary structures around us in form of people, systems and environment.

Our duty is to recognize them temporary structures around us, be grateful for them, make the most of them (not abuse them) AND in due season LEARN TO LET GO. If you don’t let go,firstly, they become unsightly around you and secondly, you rob them of their next assignment—the next temple in the making…people and environment come for a season and a reason, learn to let Go and let God!

The Disease to Please!

“…am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ…” © Gal 1:10, NIV italics and emphasis mine

Dr Harriet Braiker (2001) wrote the New York best seller titled ‘The Disease to Please’ in which she shows how and why people with disease to please are manipulated (used) and abused…Little do we realize the ‘price’ we pay to stay on the ‘good side’ of everybody, not wanting to ‘upset’ anyone.

Paul, in the above scripture, says if he were to please people he would not be a servant of God. If one is ridden with the disease to please, one is never free to be and do what God created one to be. This doesn‘t mean you are reckless with people, but it means God’s approval takes priority over and above all..

Sleeping Giant

“...now the Angel of the Lord came and sat under the oak (terebinth) at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, and his son Gideon was beating wheat in the winepress to hide it from the Midianites. And the Angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him, The Lord is with you, you mighty man of [fearless] courage...” (C) Judges 6:11,12 AMP italics and emphasis mine

David was anointed to be a King over Israel when he was just a youth; He (God) refers to him as “a man”...He calls him a man when he (David) was just a boy tending his father’s livestock (1 Sam 13:13,14). In the passage above, He calls Gideon mighty man, worrier, whilst He was hiding from his enemies, Gideon thought He was talking to someone else and would not believe let alone take up the assignment.

Yes, God calls us the way He sees us from within not from without; and this my friend presents a problem, because we cannot see what He sees in us, we become reluctant to follow his lead. But here is a promise, He said, “I will instruct you and show you the way you should go” (Ps 32:8) and “I will make you” (Matt 4:19) so really all you have to do is have a simple child like faith to ‘trust’ and ‘obey’ Him.

Why Call Me Lord?

“...but why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?...” (c) Luke 6:46, NKJV, italics mine

The early church understood very clearly what it meant to call Jesus the LORD over their lives, and sadly many paid the price with their lives. Back then it was either Caesar or Jesus to be the LORD. Today, we have many Christians who call Jesus their Lord but would not do what He ‘orders’, we ignore, challenge, debate him and make him our grandpa!

If Jesus is truly our LORD (not boss), then we are His SERVANTS, (purchased by his precious blood) what He orders goes. But if you are honest with yourself, there are a number of things that YOU KNOW you have to do as ordered of the Lord but you have put them aside for convenient time...when you have time and thus, Jesus ceases to be your Lord.

Does Fasting Change God?

“…Is this the kind of fast I have chosen, only a day for a man to humble himself? Is it only for bowing one's head like a reed and for lying on sackcloth and ashes? Is that what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the LORD ? “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?...”© Isaiah 58:5,6 NIV, italics and emphasis mine

For some reasons I was led (taught) to believe that fasting is like ‘twisting’ God’s arm to do what ‘I want’ in spite of His will. But as I began to study the word on the subject matter, I realise that fasting aims to change me, not God. When I fast (deprive the body AND SOUL) of its desires, I tone them down and thus elevate my spirit, becoming more God (spirit) conscious—to know and do HIS will.

Isa 58:6-7,10 illustrate the fasting that pleases God, it turns out not to be the actual fasting but what you do when you fast—as you become God conscious. He says, Vv 8-9, then you will call and I will answer, not because you have fasted, but in response to what you have done… indeed, fasting changes us (to know and do His will) and in turn God hearkens our plead.

Authority of the Believer

“...behold! I have given you authority and power to trample upon serpents and scorpions, and [physical and mental strength and ability] over all the power that the enemy [possesses]; and nothing shall in any way harm you...” (c) Luke 10:19, AMP (italics and emphasis mine)

The traffic officer may not have physical powers (strength) to stop a 16 wheeler truck; but when he lifts his hand to motion the truck to stop, it does. You see, the traffic officer has the authority to stop the truck AND the power of the government (or crown for UK) stands behind him and as long as he is enlisted, he is trusted with this authority to do good.

As Christians, and ministers of the Gospel, we have the authority in the name of Jesus Christ (and the power of the Almighty God behind, beside and in-front of us); all we have to do is ‘speak’ to the circumstance in the name of Jesus. So the next time you face a situation, remember you have the authority (and the power of God) at your disposal—use it.

Is your faith better than demons'?

“…thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead…for as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also…” James 2:17,26 NKJV, italics and emphasis mine

Show me your faith without works, says James, and I will show you mine by my works (James 2:18); he continues to say if you believe there is God, fine, even demons believe and tremble but that accounts for nothing to them. If you believe, then your belief must be accompanied by corresponding action (proportionate to your faith lest you become presumptuous) otherwise it is futile.

You believe God for employment? Let us see you seeking and knocking them doors; believe God for healing? let us hear you speak of health and wellbeing; believe God for spouse? let us see you talk, dress and behave accordingly…bottom line, if you believe God for something YOU MUST SEEK TO DO A CORRESPONDING ACTION otherwise your faith is as good as demons’ and will profit you NOTHING.

Thin line btn Arrogance & Confidence

“…I warn everyoneamong you not to estimate and think of himself more highly than he ought [not to have an exaggerated opinion of his own importance], but to rate his ability with sober judgment, each according to the degree of faith apportioned by God to him…” © Rom 12:3, AMP italics and emphasis mine

The scripture above makes it clear that we ought to think highly of ourselves, just not more highly than our apportioned lot for arrogance aka superiority complex, pride, egotism and over-confidence have driven many to fail. Lucifer was doing alright until pride was seen in him…same goes with many people we know. Jesus was confident, not arrogant, He called Himself God publicly and foretold of His death and resurrection. Religious people of His time thought of Him to be arrogant and blasphemous, they sought to kill Him.

Some folks think that when they belittle themselves (I am nobody, I can do nothing, I am a worm, a lizard) will earn favour with God—Humility is seeing (believing and acting) in ourselves the way God sees us, no more and NO LESS. Beloved, when you know who you are and your assignment in life, don’t let any self appointed “guardian of people’s humility” scare you off…be bold and strong TO BE and DO what you are assigned by the almighty for you will one day give an account before God (not men).

Jesus had ill Reputation

“…but (He-Jesus) made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross…”

Reputation is people’s “perception” of who you are, but character is who you really are (what you believe and do when no one is watching). Many have killed, lied, robbed (and done just about anything) to have a ‘good reputation’, politicians, religious leaders and Christian. God is more interested in our character than our reputation. Bu God’s promotion looks at our character, but man looks at reputation…good example is Joseph, a slave and sex offender (by reputation) yet became the prime minister by divine appointment.

Jesus had a ‘questionable’ reputation amongst His lot to say the least. He healed people on Sabbath, spoke to a woman (at the well) when he shouldn’t have, allowed a prostitute to massage him with her hair, dined with sinners…to Him it was simple, pleasing God was more important than pleasing men. Many of us today do not do what we know we should do because we are paralysed by fear of men…protecting our reputation…SNAP OUT OF IT IN THE NAME OF JESUS and do what you are called to do.

Nature or Nurture?

“…Keep vigilant watch over your heart; that's where life starts. Don't talk out of both sides of your mouth; avoid careless banter, white lies, and gossip. Keep your eyes straight ahead; ignore all sideshow distractions. Watch your step, and the road will stretch out smooth before you. Look neither right nor left; leave evil in the dust…” © Proverbs 4:23-27, MSG italics and emphasis mine

The debate regarding what influence who we are (persona-value system) today, nature (heredity—birth) or nurture(environment—upbringing), still lingers on. Scientists want to know whether serial killers, arsonists, people like Idd Amin, Adolf Hitler were born that way or nurtured that way…what is the deciding factor, is it your DNA (genes) or the environment which one grows up under. Some say is the genes and yet the majority say it is the environment that decides our psyche to large extent, what do you think?

Jesus said, “...a good man out of a good heart produces forth good things; and evil man out of evil heart produces forth evil…” (Matt 12:35, Par). He also said, “…bad company corrupts good character…” (1 Cor 15:33, NIV). King Solom said, “…he who walks with wise men will be wise, but companion of fools will be destroyed…” (Prov 13:20, NKJV). Folks, youcan overcome any negative hereditary trait by being in the right environment! Be vigilant in watching what you allow into your heart (mind, soul) for it will influence who you become.

Opinion or Fact?

FACTS OR OPINION?

“…I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me…” © Phil 4:12-13, NASB, italics and emphasis mine

I am sure the wise wo-men in 1903 rebuked the Wright brothers, “stop this nonsense, you will kill yourself, you can not fly anything heavier than air” believing this to be a fact. The geniuses of the pre-modern world believed that the earth was flat. Ghandi’s method (winning by will power not fire power) was criticized, but he won. Edison (in 1879) was told his electric bulb ‘adventure’ would never work, but $40k and 1,200 experiments later the filament bulb became a reality.

Opinions are the cheapest commodity you can find plentiful in the market today. You can’t do this…you can’t do that…you can’t have that job…you won’t succeed in that business…you are too young…too old, uneducated…blah blah blah! etc. The next time you get discouraged by a belief or a “sound advice” when God gives you a vision, mission or assignment to do, ask yourself…is what is stopping me an opinion or fact?

Looking Beyond Offence

“…Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me…” © Matthew 11:4-6, KJV, italics and emphasis mine

A story is told of gospel workers who went to Mauritius upon God’s word having no arrangement for accommodation and not knowing who their host will be…to their surprise they were met at the airport by a drunken man who said God sent him to meet them and host them in his large estate for the entire time they will be in the island free of charge. How eccentric of God.

God uses all sorts of people to serve and save His people, you get short, tall, thin, not so thin, loud mouth, fashion-challenged, proud ones, humble ones. God may choose to use an instrument that you may not particularly like, you will have to learn to look beyond the offence if you are to receive from God…remember, If He can use a donkey (Nu 22), He can use anything or anyone.

If God doesn't touch you

“…Now a certain woman had a flow of blood for twelve years…She had spent all that she had and was no better, but rather grew worse. When she heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and touched His garment. For she said, “If only I may touchHis clothes, I shall be made well.” Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the affliction…” © Mark 5:25-29, NKJV, italics and emphasis mine

Many of us Christians take a passive role when it comes to receiving what we are looking for from the Lord. The song, “pass me not oh gentle saviourwhile on others thou' art calling, do not pass me by” is all to familiar. We wait on God to touch us, to minister to us and to respond to our needs. No no no my friend there is another way, if God does not touch you, you can touch Him…If God does not come to you, you can go to Him. Forget the old passive gospel of waiting on the Lord, you can follow Him where He is and touch Him to move on your behalf.

This woman (above scripture) became pro-active in pursuit of her desire and she got what she wanted. You can touch God like her byextending your faith into action to manifest your desires. You can also touch God by fighting and contending with Him like Jacob (Israel—Gen 32:22-30) or like the Canaanite woman pleading and interceding (Matthew 15:22-28) until you get your heart’s desire...by any means necessary, If God doesn't touch you YOU CAN TOUCH HIM RIGHT NOW!
