Tongue of the wise

“…Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things.See how great a forest a little fire kindles! ...” James 3:4-5 NKJV [italics & emphasis mine]

I wish we could all understand the significance of what James is saying in the above text; he is comparing ‘our tongue’ with the rudder—the devise attached at the rear bottom of the ship next to the propeller (inset B) that turns a ship (inset A) from one direction to another as Captain wishes. See how big the ship is and how small the rudder is, the destination of the ship is guided by it.

James is teaching us that WE CONTROL OUR DESTINY BY OUR TONGUE, we speak our future into existence just like God-He spoke the word to create the world. David said, ‘life and death are in the power of tongue’ Prov 18:21a and Peter (quoting Ps 34:12,13) said if we want to see good life we should guard our tongue from evil, 1 Pet 3:10. No wonder in the day of Pentecost we were given NEW TONGUES, so that we may SPEAK into existence the NEW DESTINY. If you want to know your destination in life, listen to yourself!
