"...and on going into the house, they saw the Child with Mary His mother, and they fell down and worshiped Him. Then opening their treasure bags, they presented to Him gifts--gold and frankincense and myrrh..." Matthew 2:11 AMP [italics & emphasis mine]
When we visit a new-born, it is costmary to give gifts and normally these are things they will use in the next few months. The gifts from wise-men from East, however, had factual and prophetic meaning. It is commonly believed that Gold symbolized sovereign dominion, wisdom, power and strength, Myrrh symbolized anointing oil and also embalming fluid (preparing the dead body for burial) and Frankincense symbolizes priesthood and prayer.
The wise men did not gift him for who He was then (a small fragile baby in the manger) but for whom He was destined to be (King, Priest, Slain Lamb of God). Wise people still do that today; they see a leader in a distraught youth, a minister in a prostitute, a preacher in a drunkard, a saint in a sinner, a man in a boy, a prophet in a loud mouthed liar, opportunity in a mess…Jesus saw great apostles in the un-learned fishermen.
The question is: ''what and who do you see when you look in the mirror today?"
