Being Spiritual

“…But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one…” 1 Corinthians 2:14-15 CEN [italics & emphasis mine]

When we were what I consider young and naïve spiritually, we had eccentric definition of ‘being spiritual’ which was mainly based on outward appearance. We judged ourselves and other people on the ‘spiritual-meter’ exclusively based on what we/they wore, spoke, walk e.t.c. The inward man had little or nothing to do with what we considered to be spiritual—while we thought we were spiritual, all the while we were simply religious. Obviously when you are spiritual (by God’s definition), it will affect the way you talk, walk, dress e.t.c.

I can not think of one definition for being spiritual, but I believe it entails being sensitive and obedient to the Holy Spirit. Being spiritual also means being spirit conscious/minded as opposed to carnal minded. It means that our intellect and emotions/feelings do not make decisions for us in lieu of our spirit. This is what Galatians 5:16 says that we should walk in the spirit and in doing so we shall not gratify the desire of the flesh.
